UPDATED TRAIL INFORMATION

Closures

The entire length of the Hills to Sea Trail is open from January 1 until late September with the exception of a 2 mile section in Montville. We are working to resolve this. The trail crosses the land of more than 60 landowners, some of whom use temporary closures to conduct various activities. Closures are most frequently related to hunting seasons. The trail on Hogback Mountain in Montville remains closed until further notice. Kiosks closest to the closed sections are posted as well as the closed property boundaries.

Hunting Seasons

Sections of the trail close prior to the start of various hunting seasons. The earliest closure begins in late September and the last closure ends mid-to-late December. The most up-to-date information about closures is added here so check back before hiking.

2024 Closures

Montville

Hogback Mountain section is closed until further notice

At a point two miles south of Freedom Pond Rd, south to Penney Rd. Closed from Oct 5 thru Dec 14.

From the Penney Rd. South to the first junction with the Hidden Knoll Trail closed from Oct 5 thru Dec 14 (Closure includes Sundays)

Unity

Stevens Road to Clark Road and Clark Road to Clark Road: October 5- December 31. Please note that dogs are not allowed on these properties. (includes Sundays)

From Clark Road north for 2.3 miles to Sandy Stream from October 5 through December 14. (includes Sundays)

Waldo

Gurney Hill Road to Savage Road: October 5 - December 14. (Includes Sundays)

From the Poland Road (1/2 mile in front of Belfast Area Children’s Center) to Rte 7. November 2 - November 30. (includes Sundays)

From Rte 7 east to a few hundred yards west of Jennifer Hill from Oct 20 thru Dec 14. (Does NOT include Sundays)
